Tricolored Heron

Tricolored Herons are common in South Florida all year long. Compared to other herons, they are quite colorful. They may be seen more often in western nature trails and in the Everglades, but I’ve had luck finding them in local parks and residential areas as well. They spend their time foraging in shallow water along the edges of canals, lakes and swamps. Tricolored Herons have long necks and slender bodies, but in this particular photo, the bird is sitting still with its neck tucked in tightly, and feathers fluffed on a very cold South Florida morning.
