Pileated Woodpeckers are fabulous, not only because of their flaming red crests, but because they happen to be the largest woodpeckers found in our area. Their wood carving can be heard from long distances. The power with which they carve apart trees can be quite impressive to those who haven’t seen it before. I’ve witnessed small trees severely damaged by a single, large Pileated Woodpecker. Despite the large holes these birds leave in small or dead trees though, they are critical to other birds that use these spaces for nesting and shelter.
