These birds are incredibly acrobatic fliers and can be seen flying during the day at any time between dawn and dusk. In fact, the bird’s name is curious becuase they’re not active exclusively at night, and they’re not hawks.
These birds have bills uniquely adapted for eating Apple Snails, but unless you had good binoculars or a zoom lens, you wouldn’t notice. What you would definitely notice is their haunting call, which, as allaboutbirds.org describes, is “otherworldly and unforgettable.”
Pileated Woodpeckers are fabulous, not only because of their flaming red crests, but because they happen to be the largest woodpeckers found in our area.
